Crew Chief - Sewer Line Maintenance

Salary Range - $38,792.00 - $51,958.40

General Function: 

This is a responsible skilled work in the inspection, maintenance and repair of the City’s sewer system.  Employees of this class must possess at least a Class “C” Wastewater Operator’s License and have experience in sewer line maintenance and repair.  Crew Chief may fill for the Sewer Line Maintenance Supervisor whenever the Supervisor is unavailable.

Essential Duties: 
  • Assists in communicating policies, procedures, methods and techniques to Sewer Line Maintenance crews.
  • Works with employees in various maintenance and repair of sewer lines.  Assists in the enforcement of departmental and City rules.
  • Keeps routine records of jobs performed and materials used.
  • Keeps the Sewer Line Maintenance Supervisor aware of all ongoing projects or plans in Sewer Line Maintenance.
  • Maintain in an orderly and efficient manner all equipment and facilities necessary for properly conducting the activities in Sewer Line Maintenance.
  • Assists in coordinating the functions of the division to achieve efficient and economic processing of work requirements and needs.
  • Responsible for all necessary functions of the division when the Supervisor is not available.
  • Participates in the inspection of new sewer service and the maintenance and repair of existing lines.
  • Performs a variety of related work as assigned or required.
Minimal Acceptable Qualifications: 
  • Responsible for all equipment maintenance and performs operator level maintenance and checks of vehicles and equipment.
  • Issue instructions and conducts necessary on-the-job training programs.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform strenuous labor tasks under varying weather conditions, temperature extremes and work long hours.
  • Knowledge of the City’s sewer system and ability to locate sewer lines.
  • Ability to keep records and make mathematical computations and reports.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to supervise work crews and give instructions in work procedures and equipment operation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, fellow employees and administration.
  • Ability to operate trucks and equipment such as backhoes, ditch digging machinery, etc.
  • Possession of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a Class “D” Wastewater Operators License and be able to obtain a Class “C” Wastewater Operators License within six (6) months after assuming position.
  • Possession of a valid Class “A” Oklahoma State Commercial Driver License and a driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier.
  • Ability to make common sense decisions and assume Crew Chief responsibility for work performed.
  • Ability to work long hours and at times under stressful conditions.
  • On call nights, weekends and holidays in case of emergencies.
Additional Desirable Qualifications: 
  • Experience in light equipment used in the division.
  • Experience in construction, welding and/or plumbing.
  • Three (3) years experience in Sewer Line Maintenance.
Supervision Given and Received: 
  • Works under the direct supervision of the Sewer Line Maintenance Supervisor.
  • May assist in the scheduling of activities of crew workers to ensure quality performance.
  • May fill in for the Sewer Line Maintenance Supervisor when the Supervisor is unavailable.
